2022 40 Under 40 Winners

Melissa redesigned the St. Clair Health Foundation’s Annual End-of-Calendar Year and saw an increase from an average revenue of $20,000 to $55,000 in 2021.

In her previous role, with the Monongahela Valley Hospital, Melissa took over the planning and implementation of a community breast cancer walk, growing its net revenue tenfold during her tenure.

Melissa has earned both a master’s degree in organizational leadership and her CFRE credential. She gives back by mentoring others who are pursuing their CFRE.

She also volunteers with the AFP Western PA chapter, where she currently serves as VP of Educational Programming.

When I decided I wanted to make philanthropy my career, I didn't have all the basic skills needed. I found a wonderful mentor in healthcare philanthropy who was willing to help me learn the work and use my natural talents to succeed. 

Often, our supporters share two of the most private pieces of information with me - details about their health and their finances. I am privileged to be part of that. 

While there are many, I believe it has probable been my transition to my newer position at St. Clair Health. Over the last year, I've been able to lead the Foundation and be part of many new aspects of philanthropy. 

I love having people together. Whether it's hosting events at work or in my personal life. Small groups or large groups. These events serve many different purposes, but I love to get to know new people and strengthen current relationships. Friendraising is one of my favorite aspects at work. Having friends and family over to our home or hosting an end-of-the season party for my children's sports teams - I love it all. It's always fun to decorate, plan out a theme or have people together for no reason! 

I think it's important to see yourself as a liaison between the amazing work being done at the hospital and its supporters. Get to know the team who makes that amazing work happen (physicians, nurses, managers) and share that with your donors and potential donors. Show them the impact they are part of.  Bring them onsite to meet team members or see facilities and services. While you are a huge part of the donation process, build a team to help you be even better.
