  Healthcare philanthropy is in a constant state of flux: be that due to external factors (such as a global pandemic), or recognition of new standards and best practices with increasing access to better, more actionable data, it is imperative that groups are equipped with the knowledge of what has changed, and also what you can do about it. AHP’s State of the Union series addresses current events which have impacted the healthcare landscape broadly, with specific focus areas so groups can hear about those topics which are most relevant to them.
  
  Philanthropy in Uncertain Times

  Who among us at the beginning of this year had any idea how different our lives, our work, and our focus would be given the impact of COVID-19? With all the uncertainty we face, what do we know about fundraising in crises? What do we know about healthcare fundraising right now, and what can we expect in the future? How have hospitals around the country adapted in order to be successful in this brave new world? The “Philanthropy in Uncertain Times” State of the Union will review what AHP is hearing from its members, what AHP is seeing in its own data, and what we’re all learning about how to navigate these very uncertain times.
  
  Performance Benchmarking

  Benchmarking is invaluable in highlighting successes and illuminating areas of opportunity. In addition to an overview of the current state-of-affairs in healthcare philanthropy, the performance benchmarking presentations will highlight some simple ways to use benchmarking and AHP’s Report on Giving (RoG) to identify where additional investment would have the most significant impact.   As healthcare continues to transform, philanthropy takes on an ever more critical role in the funding of key initiatives, including the traditional ones of major gifts and campaigns, as well as new areas like population health and initiatives around social determinants of health. AHP’s “Getting Your Board on Board” presentation is designed to equip philanthropy leadership to enfranchise Board members and hospital leadership as to the value of investing in their teams. It provides high-level value propositions for philanthropy teams, and the financial impact and opportunities associated with investing in the highest-performing philanthropic initiatives, and practical next steps for getting Board members involved.

  Even before the pandemic, mergers and acquisitions were multiplying rapidly, but the pandemic and the dire financial situation of many hospitals has only further expedited this trend. At the same time, some very high profile mergers have fallen apart or failed to get regulatory approval, some in part because of community resistance.  Changes in ownership and leadership always create uncertainty for all involved, but there are ways that philanthropy can help to reduce tension and alleviate fears.  In this session you will learn why it is so important to include the philanthropy leadership from the beginning of talks rather than toward the end, ways in which the philanthropy team can help make the merger a positive for all involved, and which areas of our work can be “systematized” and which should stay local. • Managing from a Distance: Success Tips for Overseeing a Remote Team

  When the pandemic forced offices around the world to close, many managers found themselves suddenly managing remote teams, often for the first time. Overseeing remote workers has advantages and drawbacks, but it doesn’t have to be scary. In this session you’ll learn about the biggest challenges of managing remote employees—from lack of access to information to social isolation—and how to navigate those challenges successfully using communication, technology, trust, and emotional support.
