  A recent report from Indeed found that employee burnout is on the rise: 52% of all workers are feeling burned out, up 9% from a pre-pandemic survey. Sixty-seven percent of all workers believe burnout has worsened during the pandemic. Employees of all ages and types are experiencing the impact of stress, fatigue, and mental health challenges.This session will share from the perspective of a grateful patient with first-hand experience with burnout the led to her own cancer battle. • Coaching the Coach: Elevating the Physician Champion

  People who demonstrate success in a field are more likely to be placed in positions where they must help others develop the same skill. In development, for example, high-performing gift officers are often moved into management roles without the proper training or experience to supervise. Results can be disappointing, frustrating, and lead to job dissatisfaction. This also occurs in grateful patient and family fundraising. When physicians have success in this area, they are often given titles such as “physician champions” or “liaisons.” They are then put into roles to grow physician engagement and coach their peers. There is a need to go deeper and coach these physician performers on how to, in turn, coach these skills. This talk will share the ways to “coach the coach,” helping physicians avoid the most common pitfall of trying to replicate their own style in others. • Finding Success Campaigning for a New Pediatric Mental Health Hospital

  Demand for mental health services has never been greater. In the wake of the pandemic, children’s mental health is in crisis. Everyone’s got a story: a friend, co-worker, family member, or child. The need for philanthropic investment in these services is crucial. Sadly, the stigma associated with mental illness still makes it challenging to fundraise for it. This presentation will share how a freestanding children's hospital helped transform how their community thinks about mental health, and how their fundraising team took the challenge head on, initiating a $75 million campaign to help construct a 14-story mental health hospital. This presentation will share valuable lessons on opportunities and challenges, and how the hospital's development team responded to an urgent community need, became a catalyst to change how their community saw and treated mental illness, and are on their way to raising over $100 million.

• Lifting As We Climb: Increasing Diversity Outcomes in Healthcare

  This HEART FORCE (Health Equity and Anti-Racism Task Force) case study session will engage in a conversation about lowering racial disparities in healthcare through three main objectives: 1) engaging leaders in JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) at the fullest level, 2) aligning measurable outcomes in strategic areas, and 3) engaging in bold philanthropy to support JEDI objectives. The framework is built from Luminis Health’s efforts to re-envision health equity and anti-racism with a dedicated focus and task force. • The Moment I Realized I Was a Terrible Leader, and What Happened Next

  When professionals make the transition from peer to leader, it becomes very easy to fall into the trap of imposter syndrome, often without even realizing it. This is what happened to me. I thought I was coasting as a fundraising leader. The results were solid and everyone on the team was achieving. There was some staff turnover, but nothing too serious. Opportunities for improvement were always there, but overall things seemed just fine. Then one day, the foundation staff was asked to provide anonymous feedback for the leadership team. Each staff member met one-on-one with an interviewer to answer questions and share their candid thoughts about the four leaders and the department culture. The results of my report were as far from what I expected as possible. In that moment, most of what I had thought to be fine was suddenly disrupted, and I was facing a hard realization: I wasn’t where I wanted or needed to be as a leader, and critical changes had to be made. • Two Regional Hospitals, Numerous Transformational Gifts: Key Takeaways and Strategies

  The path to a transformational gift can be long and complex. In the two case studies presented here, the journey to secure multiple multi-million-dollar gifts took decades of diligent, thoughtful stewardship and careful crafting and portrayal of the institutions’ cases for support. The donors started as patients, were stewarded into event attendees, and then began to give on a smaller scale. Through long-term, multi-touchpoint stewardship and innovative visioning strategies, the teams at these two hospitals built deep relationships with the donors and their families, eventually creating the right environment to secure these transformational gifts. • Using Data to Inform Strategic Decision-Making

  The advantages of evidence-based decision making are clear, but data-driven decision making (DDDM) may be a relatively new concept for many institutions. This session’s goal is to provide insight on how Development staff and leadership can implement DDDM at their organizations, allowing for a more systematic plan of action and the ability to react with agility in the face of market volatility and a dynamic funding landscape. Organizations can use data to inform a variety of decisions, including how to improve the overall health of the development office, how to expand the pipeline, and how to identify opportunities and challenges for fundraisers. Data can be qualitative as well as quantitative, as in the case of using strategic conversations to gather feedback.
